There are days that feel heavier than others. Not because anything dramatic has happened, but because the weight of ordinary life has quietly piled up – one worry stacked on another, one tired morning after the next.
If you are having one of those days, I want to offer you something simple: a prayer. Not tied to any single religion, but to something older than that – the human need to be held by words when we cannot hold ourselves.
You do not need to believe in anything specific to say this. You only need to be willing to sit still for a moment and let it settle over you.
Why We Pray on Hard Days
In the monastery, we did not pray only when things were good. We prayed most on the days we felt least capable of it – when grief was fresh, when the body was tired, when the mind would not be quiet.
Prayer, in this sense, is not a request for something to change. It is a way of saying: I am still here, and I am not carrying this entirely alone.
Whether you direct these words toward God, toward the universe, toward whatever you privately believe in, or simply toward the quiet part of yourself that needs to hear them – it works the same way. It slows the breath. It softens the grip. It reminds you that this moment, heavy as it is, is not the whole story.
A Prayer You Can Say Today
Read this slowly. Say it aloud if you can, or silently if that is what today allows.
Today, I pray for my soul to be at peace. I pray for my heart to feel safe again.
May I find the courage to begin again – no matter how many times I have fallen. May the people I love be held in grace and peace today. May whatever has made me feel disqualified from goodness, from love, from a fresh start – may it be gently released today.
May I release the weight I have been carrying that was never mine to hold. May my body find rest, even if my mind is still restless. May I forgive myself for the things I could not control.
May I remember that this heaviness is not permanent. May I be patient with my own healing. May I trust that even in this dark moment, I am not alone.
May peace find its way back into my heart.
When You Need It Again
Save this. Come back to it on the days you need it – tomorrow, next week, or months from now. Prayer is not something you get right once and never need again. It is a practice you return to, the way you return to breathing deeply when you remember to.
If today was one of the hard ones, know this: you are not doing it wrong. You are simply doing what all of us do – carrying what we can, and asking, quietly, for help with the rest.
If you’d like more prayers like this one, you can find a full playlist of them on my YouTube channel – a quiet place to return to whenever you need it.
You are not alone in this.
Shen Yu🙏
